A woman who grew up with extremely tight arse parents is unsure if she should be grateful or annoyed that the generosity decided to skip a generation, as they suddenly seem more than happy to dig into their coin purses for the grandchildren.
Having grown up in a ‘one toy only’ household, which had been more to do with her parents' conservative nature and not because they were short on funds, Maeve Edmondson, 39, now finds herself in strange and unfamiliar place - feeling envious of her children.
Maeve goes on to explain that she has even tried to stop her parents from splashing out on toys in fear the kids would become spoiled, which is a strange 180, considering she used to beg them to buy her a new set of school shoes.
“It’s really nice having so much help. I know thats a privilege not a lot of people have, so I’m very grateful for that”, says Maeve with a meek smile, “but fuck, where was that generosity when I was growing up?"
"And they’re so patient and kind now too.”
“I’d loved to have had this version of my parents back then.”
Maeve says she knows it’s irrational to be jealous of her children, but can’t help but wonder why the little girl version of herself hadn’t deserved the same kindness too.
“I mean, they had even more money back then. Maybe it’s because they’re retired and bored? Feeling their mortality and want to buy the kids love?
"Felt guilty with how they treated me so this is their way of making penance?"
"Or", she muses, "they just love my children more than me."
“That's probably it."
More to come.
