The sweet meaty smells of a “turducken” are wafting through the halls of a Lake Betoota home this afternoon as a local Mum prepares a braver than usual week night dinner.
While most families along Seadoo Crescent prepare rissoles or maybe a lasagna if they’re lucky, it’s understood tonight the Collins family will be eating turkey meat, stuffed inside a chicken that’s stuffed inside a duck, that’ve been glazed in a brandy marinade and pistachio nuts.
It’s an extravagant meal for the Collins clan, that’s been concocted by Mother Sue, who’s on a quest to trial at least eight different dishes before Christmas Day.
Speaking to the mother of three, who’s been tasked with hosting lunch for 18 other relatives on the 25th of December, it’s understood this week is her version of training for a grand final.
“Turducken tonight! But I’m doing it a little stripped back, I just haven’t got time for the stuffing,” said Sue, as she began hosing down a chopping board glazed in the residue of three different dead birds.
“And then I’m making baked Brussel sprouts with maple syrup, it’s “ A Jamie one”.
Determined to make sure her turn to host Christmas totally wows the crowd, and puts a huge stinky frown on her sister-in-law’s face, this week Sue will be hosting her own weekly Iron Chef series.
“Tomorrow night is a lobster mornay, then Friday night I’m doing a taste of the orient and making a Mongolian lamb spiced skewers and a Chinese noodle salad.”
“It’s also Graham’s birthday Friday so I’ll kill two birds with one stone. Speaking of, can you check the timer, I think the Turduck thing might have another two hours to go…”
More to come.
