Sitting outside at a bar in Betoota’s West Side, lawyer Rosie Norris laughed to herself as she watched some kind of low-riding car with spinners (spinning rims) drive past.

“Wow..I remember when I thought rims were so cool.” she told our reporter who happened to be at the same cafe.

A “spinner wheel” is a type of hubcap or inner wheel ornament, that spins independently inside of a wheel itself when the vehicle is in motion and continues to spin once the vehicle has come to a stop.

“And that as soon as I got a car I’d be putting 24” spinning rims on it”

That was while Rosie was still at high school and just discovering rap music. Long before she ventured into the real wide world and realised that spinners were actually quite expensive, and that she had to pay for other more essential things like food and shelter, for example.

Rosie’s early 00’s upbringing meant that she was not alone in her glamourisation of rap culture – the early 00’s being the time when rap and hip-hop went mainstream thanks to Snoop Dogg, Jay Z, and G-unit.

However, with one spinner costing around $2,000, watching the car edge diagonally over a raised pedestrian crossing while blasting Daddy Yankee’s ‘Gasolina’ may be the closest she will ever get to realising her dream.

More to come.
