The Department of Foreign Affairs has updated its Smartraveller advice for Victoria to “Do Not Travel,” citing a rise in chaotic violent crime and concerning far-right activity.
The advisory brings Victoria into line with conflict zones including Syria and Afghanistan. Officials said the decision was based on “sustained and credible threats to the safety of visitors.”
Queensland and Western Australia have issued separate advisories. The WA government has closed its Melbourne consulate and evacuated staff. Queensland has warned residents against unnecessary travel, pointing to increases in carjackings, theft and extremist demonstrations.
South Australians requiring consular assistance in Victoria have been directed to the Tasmanian mission, which operates from the Western Bulldogs’ clubhouse at Footscray’s Whitten Oval. The outpost is providing limited services, including emergency passport replacement.
Closer to home, the Betootanese Consulate is operating from the Yarraville Club. It remains open under guard from members of the Simpson Desert Militia while evacuation arrangements are made. Locals are advised to keep clear.
“This is about the safety of Betoota residents abroad,” a consular spokesperson said.
“We cannot guarantee assistance if they encounter difficulties in Melbourne.”
The Victorian government has rejected the assessment, stating the state remains open for business and safe for major events. Officials pointed to AFL finals attendance as evidence that normal life continues.
“We had 100 000 Queenslanders here like 4 days ago, you stupid fucking inbred cunts,” said one government representative.
“How much is the South Australian Government paying you to write this?”
Smartraveller said travellers should not rely on consular assistance in the event of arrest, injury or theft.
