Queenslanders are this week revelling in all their glory.
With both the Brisbane mens and womens sides going all the way through to the NRL Grand final, and the Lions bringing home the Leg Tennis Cup, it can be confirmed that the Sunshine State and Home of The Holiday is absolutely humming.
In the NRLW, Brisbane will be battling it out for their fourth premiership against the Roosters, shortly followed by the blokes who will be facing the Melbourne Storm.
This wave of Queensland excellence comes with the 2032 Olympic build underway, and the brilliance of record-breaking Ipswich sprinter Gout Gout on show for the world, with Brisbane quickly becoming a global sporting city. And it’s just getting started. Queensland was already the undisputed champion of beaches, islands, reefs and holidays with Whitehaven Beach in the Whitsundays taking out Best Beach In The World for 2025 in Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel.
Contributions to the arts also can’t be dismissed, with Queensland recognised as the engine room for Australian music that has produced the likes of Savage Garden, Violent Soho, The Veronicas, The Go-Betweens, The Jungle Giants, Powderfinger, Regurgitator, The Bee Gees, and The Saints.
Oh and the release of famed Brisbane author Trent Dalton’s newest and hotly anticipated novel, titled ‘Gravity Let Me Go’ – which officially hit stores this week – wedged in between both the Aussie rules and rugby league grand finals.
“What the hell is going on?” says Brisbane local, Lang Ballymore (46, car detailer, Greenslopes).
“I’ve been lining up for tickets, books and jerseys for a full fortnight. We are the best in Australia at everything, and that’s not just my delusional Queensland spirit talking. Looking at the book sales, look at the scoreboard. Look at the fucking silverware!”
“I’m so under the pump I need a holiday,” he laughed.
“Lucky I can enjoy one of those in the greatest state of all.”
“A glorious beach or island holiday? Or should I head in to see the unique sights we’ve got to offer.”
Local woman, Rosie Triffid (30, lash tech, Deception Bay) is also getting caught up in the excitement.
“What about Bluey? Could anyone but Queenslanders come up with such an institution of animated storytelling. What about tourism? We’ve got the best beaches, we’ve got the Great Barrier Reef. The Torres Strait Islands? The Outback. We are the smart state and the Sunshine state!”
“Anyone who says we aren’t ready to host an Olympics has rocks in their head”
“Even if it was held in another state, they’d all have to come up here for holidays anyway.”
