Transport for NSW has announced that one million commuters could be left stranded as up to 400 train services across Sydney are set to be cancelled this afternoon.
This comes as Australian media outlets have spent the past days warning Sydneysiders of a ‘once in a lifetime bomb cyclone’, which is just like the ‘once in a lifetime’ cyclone that was expected to hit Brisbane a few months ago.
However, the wild weather has been mostly contained to the New South Wales Central and South coasts, which has experienced destructive gusts of winds and power outages in 35,000 homes and businesses.
Still, as a city with a severe case of main character syndrome, Sydney insists on making the rain bomb cyclone all about them, by dramatically cancelling all train services ‘just in case’ the coastal winds from 100km away blow a chip packet on the train tracks.
Transport minister John Graham says these precautions are necessary to protect travellers, urging people to ‘work from home if they can’ and to ‘avoid all unnecessary travel.’
Services are expected to return to normal by the weekend, unless there are any more power outages, faulty equipment, industrial action, cable theft or train drivers just aren’t in the mood.
More to come.
