The post grand final glow is already starting to wear off the NRL this week, the noise growing around a big threat to the game.
With the NRL drawing record ratings on Sunday Night and blowing the Victorian Leg Tennis out of the water, powerbrokers were left feeling pretty good about themselves.
However, that sense of satisfaction has quickly dissipated, after the looming prospect of R360 has confronted the game again.
For those who don’t spend time on the internet, read the SMH or listen to sport radio, R360 is a new rebel Rugby competition that is set to kick off next October.
While a lot of details are yet to be fleshed out, it’s reported that a F1 style circuit with teams from places like Madrid, Tokyo, Lisbon, Miami will play each other over Australia’s warmer months.
It’s also reported that a significant number of Australian players have signed conditional contracts with the new Saudi-backed league – meaning if the league gets up (which is looking increasingly likely) – they are going going, goooooonneeeeee.
The various Rugby Unions of the world have banded together and said that any RaRa players will be banned from international duty if they sign on.
With that precedent set, it’s believed the majority of the NRL have now enquired about joining R360 in the hopes of avoiding playing for the Kangaroos.
“Mate, you are telling me I could go spend my offseason getting paid huge bucks in Lisbon and avoid having to play some pyscho Englishman in the north of England,” said one NRL player speaking on the condition of anonymity.
“Sign me up haha.”
More to come.
