A local 28 year old has admitted that his immaculate taste in music can be entirely attributed to the many hours he spent nodding along to the indie inspired, 2000s FIFA soundtracks.

“I was vibing to East German Alt-rock and Brazilian techno music at the age of 8 because of those games” reflected James Harper (28), who is now a professional DJ.

Known as the golden era of FIFA soundtracks, the FIFA games from 2006 to around 2013 are notorious for having extremely hidden gems laced throughout their main menu soundtracks.

“Honestly, the breadth of bangers in that game, from some of the most obscure countries in the world, makes you really wonder who on earth the musical rain-man was that worked at EA Sports during those years” lamented James.

James is far from alone, the mid 2000s FIFA game soundtracks have influenced an entire generation of football fans who now curate niche Spotify playlists.

James says the soundtracks didn’t just shape his music taste but that they basically built his personality from the ground up.

“To this day I know more Scandinavian indie bands than I do Australian politicians” he said.

He believes FIFA soundtracks were the original cultural exchange program, long before Spotify radio tried to act like it discovered world music.

“I owe my entire DJ career to some Icelandic synth-pop track on FIFA 09 that only five people on earth remember”

Now in his late 20’s, James is saddened by the tiktok adjacent soundtracks that have come with the new FIFA games.

“I like Central Cee as much as anyone else, but he doesn’t belong on a FIFA soundtrack”
