A tenured journalism lecturer has today monumentally overestimated the level of appreciation his students would express for an overlooked moment in Australian political history, as his lecture about the infamous ‘Whitlam Dismissal’ surprisingly fell flat.
“This is a story about how the Australian Prime Minister was dismissed by foreign actors”, said Professor Buxton, pausing for dramatic effect.
“And the CIA may have had something to do with it!”
Buxton’s students, who are used to hearing horrific world events on a daily basis, unfortunately didn’t seem to appreciate the additional theatrics.
As Buxton waited for a technician to arrive to change the powerpoint slide, he decided to tell the story from the heart, breaking into a passionate monologue elegantly recalling the constitutional crisis in elaborate detail.
“Kerr was a chump and a traitor and should have been tried for treason. I trust you’ve all caught up with the palace letters that were released during covid? If not you should read them,” he concluded.
Speaking to the Advocate, one student revealed that they were a touch confused.
“John Howard is literally ancient history to me. I think my Dad mentioned Whitlam once but beyond that I have no idea what Buxton’s on about.”
“Pretty cool we used to have a goth for a prime minister though.”
More to come.
