As the slow death of the Melbourne mullet ensues, the smooth transition into the equally class appropriating hairstyle of the Rats Tail picks up momentum.

Today, local East Brunswick man Riley Duncan made the brave leap by cutting off what is left of his hair excluding one very special tuft at the back of his head.

Speaking to the advocate, Duncan expressed some feelings of hesitancy about the authenticity of his new cut.

“Don’t get me wrong, I like it but I never really fully committed to the mullet trend. It wasn’t nearly as long as some of the Brunswick mullets I’ve seen bouncing around,” he said.

Mr Duncan’s barber, who operates a fancy shin dig on Sydney Road and has a tattoo of a cut throat razor on his hand, advised Mr Duncan about the direction of newfound hairdo.

“It will grow out,” the Barber assured Mr Duncan.

“We see this kind of stuff a lot now, these mullet guys see a real opportunity to transform their dying hairstyle trend into a more contemporary Melbourne style.”

“In the case of Mr Duncan, because his mullet was one of those well-kept footy player kind of mullets, the rat’s tail that I left him with is quite short.”

Mr Duncan was concerned that the shortness of his tail would provide visual cue of how late he jumped on the trend.

“I wish it was a bit longer for sure, but my Barbers right, it will grow out. I just have to fully commit to the gimmick but I have to admit it’s pretty annoying to braid the damn thing haha.”

More to come.
