A couple of Aussie icons have today revealed an eye-watering payday that has confronted them.
The Umbilical Brothers, or the Umbies as they are often known, have today confirmed to The Advocate that they were forced to say no to a 7 figure offer to attend the Riyadh comedy festival.
As people on the internet debate the merits of a wealthy nation hosting a comedy festival, a number of comedians have faced backlash for accepting huge sums of money to do their job.
The arguments have centred around Saudi Arabia’s human rights abuses, treatment of journalists and its treatment of women and minorities.
It’s unknown why this isn’t an issue when it comes to arming them, buying oil from them or letting them host major sporting events – but it has caused a stir in the comedy scene.
Speaking to The Advocate the Umbies said they were actually keen to go, but had a couple of weddings and a bucks party that they’d already committed to.
The pair declined to speak on record about the moral policing of a ‘regime’ by Western regimes like the United States who are facilitating a current genocide and have been responsible for ruining billions of lives through their imperialism across the globe in the name of endless profits for a select few at home – for obvious reasons.
“We just had a bit on unfortunately,” said one the pair who graduated from Theatre Nepean’s three-year acting course at the University of Western Sydney.
“Look we are men of our word, and we’d already said yes to the gigs, so can’t back track.”
“Maybe next year though.”
