US President Donald Trump has threatened Iran with what aides are describing as a "major distraction" from a rapidly compounding series of domestic issues, including the killing of American citizens by immigration brownshirts in Minnesota and a renewed wave of discussion about his long and awkward association with renown sex offender, the late Jeffrey Epstein.
Speaking on Truth Social overnight, Trump warned Iran that "time is running out" and promised consequences "far worse" than previous US strikes, as a US Navy carrier group arrived in the Gulf. The timing was described by White House sources as "pure coincidence" and "definitely not an attempt to change the subject."
The sudden foreign policy escalation comes as Minnesota continues to ripple after the fatal shooting of protesters by masked federal agents, incidents which have sparked mass demonstrations and drawn rare bipartisan criticism.
At the same time, the administration is facing sustained pressure over the slow and heavily redacted release of documents related to Epstein, a convicted sex offender whose social circle included Trump during the 1990s and early 2000s.
While no new allegations have been made through official channels, the partial release of documents has reignited online speculation, memes and what aides privately describe as "an extremely unhelpful narrativ" regarding the president's past.
Political analysts say the latest round of Iran rhetoric fits a familiar pattern.
"When domestic pressure builds, Trump tends to pivot to an external enemy," said one Washington-based strategist who spoke on the condition of anonymity lest they be deported.
"We saw it with Venezuela a few weeks ago, we'll see it here. Iran is useful because it's far away, scary, and can’t subpoena anyone. And they're kind of brown, I guess, so western media won't really take note of the US vaporising a few of them with bombs and rockets. When Donnie puts a Tomahawk through the Supreme Leader's bedroom window, he'll buy himself a few months of clean air, for sure."
At press time, the White House was reportedly confident that Americans would soon be arguing about nuclear war instead of dead protesters and why certain files are still locked away.
More to come.
