A local tradie with an aversion to sports has taken a big gulp as he prepares for this time of year.
“Yep, looks like I’m not going to be having a single conversation for the next few weeks” admitted Tyler Young (30).
With both the NRL and AFL finals in full swing, he is bracing himself for complete withdrawal from social interaction with his sports and betting obsessed work site that inevitably accompanies September.
“I learnt years ago not to pretend to follow what they are talking about” explained Tyler.
“Better off just not even trying to chime in”
Tyler has learnt that this month means smoko breaks turn into heated debates about whether Penrith’s dynasty is over, while Friday knock-offs are dominated by arguments about if watching AFL is actually kindve good.
For the rare tradie who considers himself more on the nerdy side, it is a lonely period.
“I try to change the subject to something neutral, like the weather, but somehow it always comes back to who’s injured or what the top 8 looks like” he said.
Co-workers admit his silence is awkward.
“He just sort of stares at his coffee while the rest of us talk about the footy” explained one worker.
“You can tell he’s counting down the days until it’s safe again.”
