Hollywood producers have reportedly greenlit a sequel to the 2004 film The Terminal, with Tom Hanks set to return in a modernised version about a stranded crypto-influencer who slowly builds a new life inside Dubai International Airport.
The film comes after repeated disruptions to the region caused by the ongoing war between Israel, the US and Iran, which has seen Dubai Airport periodically shut down, leaving thousands of Dubai expats caught in a pickle.
Hanks will reportedly play Blake Harrington, a motivational crypto- influencer who has been based in Dubai for the last few years.
Unable to leave and with flights suspended indefinitely, Harrington initially struggles to adjust to life in the terminal.
However, he soon discovers the situation offers a surprisingly strong content opportunity.
Much of the film follows Harrington as he begins recording daily motivational videos from various parts of the airport, turning airport seating areas, charging stations and food courts into makeshift podcast studios.
Producers say the movie will lean heavily into the modern influencer economy, with Harrington gradually building a large online following while living entirely inside the terminal.
Scenes reportedly include Hanks filming crypto advice next to the departures board and delivering inspirational speeches about resilience and "being the wolf not the sheep" while eating $28 airport sandwiches.
Studio executives say the film will explore themes of perseverance, digital entrepreneurship and the ability to monetise almost any situation.
Production is expected to begin next month.
