Opposition leader-elect Angus Taylor has fronted Canberra press in a pair of 1998 Hyper Blue TN's while sporting an authentic Akubra hat to best portray his federal electorate.
The Division of Hume, which straddles the Southern Highlands to its west and Sydney's Liverpool to its East, has been represented by Angus Taylor since 2013.
"There goes our country boy!" said Glenn Yule (53) from Yanderra, NSW, proud that his long standing member of parliament might take charge of the Liberal party.
"Fuarrr, I saw that lad do a speech at my brother's high school graduation last year" said Sean Ngueyen (25) from "Livo".
Observers say the wardrobe choice perfectly captures the cultural fault line that runs through Hume, where paddocks and cows give way to Krispy Kreme donut car parks and shisha lounges in the space of a single electorate boundary.
“It’s good to see him in the older TN's, only real ones rock those” Nguyen added.
A campaign insider confirmed the outfit was extensivly focus-grouped, with aides reportedly spending weeks determining whether it should be a Dri-Fit cap and RM Williams or an Akubra hat and Nike TNs. Taylor ultimate decided on a pair of moleskin trousers and an Umbro anorak on top.
“The boots were considered” the insider said.
"But we know the suburban voters are way more turned off by the boots than the akubra"
Taylor insisted the look was authentic.
“I represent farmers, tradies, rave heads, small business owners, hoons and barbers” he said.
