A 24 year old Sydney man has just realised that a "mayor" is not some eternal, transcendent, all-knowing oracle like figure after watching the highly televised New York mayoral race.
"Wait, the mayor can change" said a shocked Josh Williams (24), a born and bred Sydney boy who was 3 years of age when his mayor, Clover Moore, was elected.
Having spent his entire conscious life under the same mayor, Josh admitted he simply assumed mayors were appointed by the laws of nature and the universe.
“I just thought the mayor was like part of the city’s permanent landmarks, like the Harbour Bridge or that giant Coke sign in Kings Cross” he explained, still processing the concept of a competitive local election.
“You’re telling me people campaign for the job? And you can just… swap them out for a new mayor?”
Josh’s revelation came after watching the almost inescapable mayoral race of NYC, prompting him to Google whether Sydney had ever had more than one mayor.
He was reportedly stunned to learn the role is not hereditary, spiritual, nor a lifelong appointment bestowed upon one chosen inner-city druid.
Josh now claims he is open to the idea of change, but admits it would feel weird and somewhat unsettling to see a different face as the leader of his city.
“Honestly, Clover’s just always been there” he said.
