A new research paper has found that retaining walls are the most inconsistently priced form of domestic building work in Australia.
That's according to the independent industry watchdog, Liaison Officers Within Building, Auto-Mechanics, Lawncare and Labouring (LOWBALL).
According to the report, builder's quotes for even the most low impact retaining walls can fluctuate tens of thousands of dollars, depending on the contractor's ute, the customer's level of street smarts, and whether or not the builder wears cologne.
The report finds that both building strata committees and homeowners across Australia are at the mercy of whatever comes out of the arse of the bloke who comes round to check out uneven slopes between properties and back gardens.
Furthermore, the quotes can also spike if the builders gets a look at what the customer drives. Garaged European vehicles can often see ten thousands added to the price.
When dealing with strata committees, builders will take into account the amount of cafes and poodles in the area, and whether or not the property's insurance depends on the work being completed.
In medium to high-density suburbs, a job may be split between two strata committees belonging to two seperate apartment complexes. This will add 20 grand to the price, simply because there's more people to fleece.
Lead researcher, Professor Carm Ovit, said the research was conducted on job sites around the country, with tradesmen offering honest insights in exchange for a cold six pack of beer.
"What we have found is that even the average 'handy man' feels out of their depth with retaining walls" said the professor.
"You might be good at hanging painting and fixing gutters, but there's an mathematical aspect to building retaining walls that encourages many to seek the services professionals"
The report explicitly states that these professionals are very aware of the lack of confidence that everyday Australians have in regards to retaining walls.
"If the builder drives a Raptor or RAM, you are about to get rinsed. If he drives a Hilux workmate with a 30-year-old toolbox, he's a man that appreciates both his expertise and and your means"
"That is not to say people don't still get ripped off by Luxys"
"Much like mechanics, this price can also fluctuate upwards if dealing with a female customer"
