Former-Senator-turned-political-advisor Malcolm Roberts revealed to the media this morning that he’s spending his parliamentary downtime searching for a bunyip that he believes lives in Canberra’s Lake Burley-Griffin.
Speaking to The Advocate this morning, the firebrand Queenslander said he was ‘quietly confident’ in finding the mythical creature before the holidays are over in a week or so.
“I started out on the Molonglo River near Fyshwick in around December last year,” he said.
“Then I guess I probably spent all of March in the Jerrabomberra Wetlands, seeing as though a wetland is the choice habitat for a bunyip. Now that I’ve made it all the way down the river to the lake, I reckon there’s a good chance I’ll get him.”
When asked what he plans to do when he indeed finds the bunyip, the 62-year-old explained that he wants to kill it.
“I will shoot it in the head with this rifle,” he said as he showed our reporter a .30-30 lever action from a gym bag at his feet.
“Then I will then give it to Questacon and donate it to science. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got to get back to work. A part of me is curious as to what it might taste like but as the corpse is empirical evidence that these giant swamp mammals exist, I will have to control myself.”
