The nation’s premiere commercial public broadcaster has today thrown it’s hat in the ring for one of the world’s premier sporting offerings.
SBS (Sex Before Soccer) has today politely enquired with Optus about whether they could maybe have a tiny little bit of EPL streaming rights, after the giant telco revealed it’s keen to palm it off.
Optus Sport shocked customers and sports fans this week by confirming that they will no longer be broadcasting the English Premier League, and will handball them off to someone else.
Reports have emerged that those rights will be snaffled up by the Nine owned Stan Sport, who are steadily building their sporting offering – with a launch at the NRL rights apparently in the works.
The move is made even interesting by the fact that Optus had the rights for another few years, and will be subsidising Stan’s rights to the tune of $40 million a year.
Given Optus’ generous position of subsidising other media networks, SBS are reportedly keen to see if they could have like one game a week.
“Like maybe two, but one would be so sweet,” said a spokesperson for SBS.
“Having the early Saturday game like we used to would be so sick.”
“And really nice of Optus to give that to us for a few years.”
“Or worst comes to worst can we have a weekly highlights show on a Sunday night to cheer people up.”
Optus refused to comment on the offer, or The Betoota Advocate’s story.
More to come.
