A recent report has revealed that the only thing in Australia that's getting cheaper is the amount of prize money on reality TV shows.
The report points to the early 2000s, a golden era when the entire country would stop, sit down, and collectively watch the same program at the same time.
Shows like Big Brother regularly pulled in millions of viewers, which made prize money like $1,000,000 completely reasonable.
"Yep, the only thing in anyone's life getting cheaper is the amount of money you make when you embaress yourself in front of the entire nation" explained one researcher.
"Back then, hundreds of thousands of people were paying 70 cents just to nominate a contestant on Australia Idol, it truly was a gold rush"
Fast forward to now, and the same shows are competing with TikTok, Netflix, YouTube, and a man whispering facts over Minecraft footage.
As a result, prize money has quietly shrunk. What was once enough to buy a house is now barely enough for a Euro summer.
Media analysts say the decline makes sense.
With audiences doomscrolling instead of tuning in live, there simply isn’t the same advertising money flowing in to justify handing a stranger a life-changing cheque on prime time television anymore.
