The Queensland Government has finally legislated a public holiday honouring the Star Wars franchise following a decade-long campaign by the state's geeks.
The development is a world first which sees the entire population take a day off work to celebrate ‘May the Fourth be with you’.
Dorks, nerds and geeks alike, even those closeted, say it’s a huge win for the community.
Rory Klimpty was one of the first members of the movement, and says today might be the best day of his life.
“It’s just so beautiful to have years of your life, so much energy spent, you know, amount to something so meaningful,” he said, while wiping away a tear.
The state's premier, David Crisafulli, said he was happy to grant the public holiday for a cause he really believes in.
“We had a lot of people complaining about not getting the Monday off work for the ANZAC Day weekend, and this is just one way we wanted to try and make amends with our people,” he said.
“Well, you can tell him it’s fucken worked ha ha ha!!!” said Rory from behind a Storm Trooper mask.
Multiple halls and centres in and around the nation's capital will spend the day hosting Star Wars conventions.
Caloundra, Gympie, and Cairns will also get amongst the fun.
If you’d like to find out exactly which venues around the state are participating, more information can be found at our website.
