Public's Already Very Low Opinion Of Gas Sector Probably A Good Reason For Government To Not Let Woodside Smash Scott Reef

As the sands of the largely royalty-free gas landscape continue to shift, a professor from our very own South Betoota Polytechnic has today called for a line to be put through a major looming gas project.

Professor Sandy Isla from the Environmental Science Department at our local tertiary education facility said it’s probably time for the WA and Federal Governments to just cut the shit and pull the plug on Woodside’s Browse Project. 

“Mate, I think it’s fairly safe to say that given the current standing of our major gas companies, we can actually just tell Woodside to scrap their plans for Scott Reef,” said Prof Isla in regards to the natural wonder just off the coast of WA that doesn’t get as much love as Ningaloo but is just as magnificent. 

“Objectively, given a growing number of the public has been made aware of how resistant to paying tax the gas industry is, and its abysmal environmental record, it really feels like letting them smash our ecosystems is an era that’s passed us by.” 

“So I reckon now’s a good time to tell them to jog on.” 

Professor Isla’s calls come as Environment Minister Murray Watt ponders the application for Woodside’s Browse gas proposal - which will not only drill a truckload of wells next to Scott Reef but could put Australia’s first offshore carbon pollution dumping ground nearby.

That project will feature a lovely amount of seismic blasting which will impact marine life for kilometres around and could damage the hearing of beloved whales.

Minister Watt has yet to provide insight into which way he’s leaning on the proposal, with Professor Isla saying it’s time for Murray to get his act together. 

“Time to pull your finger out, Muzz,” she said. 

“I know you’ll cop a bit of flack from the big polluters’ highly remunerated lobbyists or whatever, but the current social licence of Woodside and the gas sector (as well as the cold hard facts) means this one’s a no brainer I reckon.”
