Talk show host and self-proclaimed environmental champion Oprah Winfrey has touched down in Sydney this morning on her private jet to kick off her Australian tour, Oprah in Conversation.

The event, presented by Lilly, the pharmaceutical company behind Zepbound and Mounjaro (diabetes treatments and competitors to weight-loss drug Ozempic), marks Winfrey’s first visit to Australia in 15 years.

The tour will reportedly feature a series of intimate “in conversation” events, though exactly what she’ll talk about remains a mystery.

While it’s largely unknown what Winfrey will discuss, it’s no secret she is a vocal proponent of environmental issues. She has frequently highlighted climate change activists on her shows and written about nature and pollution on her website.

One heartfelt article, 'Oprah Shares Why the Environment is the Thing She Values Most in Life,' details her guilt over using plastic water bottles: 'Every time I drink from a plastic bottle or use a paper towel, I’m aware of my contribution to the problem.'

Meanwhile, her private jet is apparently exempt from the same concerns.

A single round trip from Santa Barbara to Sydney produces a jaw-dropping 92–122 tonnes of CO₂ - roughly 10 times what a first class passenger would emit on a commercial flight.

And that’s before factoring in the flights to other Australian cities on the tour.

At this stage, it remains unclear whether the tour will include a segment lecturing the audience on ways they can reduce carbon emissions and offset Winfrey's lavish lifestyle, by doing stuff like not using plastic straws and recycling.

More to come.
