Nation’s Rural Lesbians Pack Up Their Subarus And Embark On Pilgrimage To The Promised Land

With the world’s first COVIDsafe street party taking place this weekend in Sydney, the nation’s LGBT community are ripped and rearing to go.

Ahead of their one big trip to the big smoke for the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras – the festivities are already beginning on Oxford street.

Due to the pandemic, the usual Saturday Night Oxford Street parade isn’t going ahead ‘officially’ this year.

Instead, the official corporate festivities have been relocated to the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) with parades and performances from whichever international Queer icons were willing to endure two weeks in hotel quarantine.

However, venues in the promised land will also be screening the parade and throwing parties with drag queen hosts, DJs and performance artists – as the SCG just isn’t big enough for our big old gay country.

With the pre-Mardi-Gras energy reaching fever pitch in Sydney, the regional contingent are also buzzing – with rural lesbian pilgrimages kicking off in the bush.

Right across Australia, country town librarians, social workers, prison screws and bush caterers are packing their Subarus and making tracks for the Promised Land.

Debbie and Deborah, the famous lesbian power couple from Betoota’s information centre say they’ve got a night booked in Bourke and another in Dubbo, before they pull into the Pink Mile around 6pm on Friday night.

“Really looking forward to it” says Debbie.

“We’ve got an AirBNB in Leichhardt and we’ll be renting a couple Harleys for the weekend”

“If you are gonna do it, do it right.”

“We’ll see you on Saturday girls”
