The Federal Government are patting themselves on the back today, after managing to rush through their new environmental laws.
The new reforms will see things like deforestation loopholes closed and an Environmental Protection Agency brought in on a national scale.
However, nothing has really been legislated in terms of action on climate change (which is responsible for things like South Australia’s devastating algal bloom and Ningaloo’s coral bleaching).
The deal with the Greens for the removal of the fast-track exemption for coal and gas projects will of course just mean that the government can push a project through in 31 days instead of 29.
Despite these rather curious issues with the new legislation that was rushed through rather quickly, the Government has assured the nation that it’s all good to go.
“It’s sweet guys,” said Environment Minister Murray Watt who lauded the importance of gas while pushing through the environmental reforms.
“We are really serious about this time round,” continued Watt.
“But maybe don’t ask anyone on the coast in South Australia about that…”
“Seriously though, these new laws should protect the environment this time around and we won’t be in desperate need of reforms again in a decade’s time.”
More to come.
