If anyone was to come close to feeling the anguish Goldilocks felt on her journey, it’s 28-year-old Toby Martin as he once again attempts to cook an appropriate amount of rice for his dinner.

“The packet says 1 cup = 3 cups…”

“But I did that last time and I had way more than 3 cups.” He muttered to himself, almost bewildered.

If Martin’s internet search history is to be believed, this time he’s just going to free pour until he feels it’s the right amount.

According to Martin’s partner, Jodie, he has been on this rice cooking journey for as long as she can remember, and not once has he cooked the appropriate amount of rice.

“Too much, too little, I’m waiting for the just right” she said.

“I just keep a few of those microwavable rice in the pantry just in case, because there’s nothing worse than eating a butter chicken without enough rice. Nothing.”

It’s not yet known if Martin has ever heard of a rice cooker, a device specifically designed to take the guess work out of cooking the little white (or brown) grain.

At the time of press, Martin had just finished a 45-second free-pour of rice into a pot of boiling water. Will tonight be the night where he finally hits his Goldilocks zone? We’ll wait and see.

More to come.
