A local bloke has this week made the only truly sound financial decision he’s managed all year: taking the time to drive three whole minutes to Dan Murphy’s instead of walking to his usual, overpriced bottle shop.

Facing the chaos of unbooked flights home and a mountain of last minute Christmas shopping, Paul Dermot, 32, says he had to think fast to save a few dollars wherever he could.

And with the calendar starting to fill up with one Christmas parties after another - each demanding a lineup of drinks to please everyone's palate, Paul says a pilgrimage to Uncle Dan’s was the obvious choice.

“I only really stop into Dan’s when I need to satisfy a house party” explains Paul, loading a box of proseccos into the back of his car, “and I always forget how much cheaper it is.”

“I guess I’m such a decadent Western pig now that I forget I can actually get in my car and drive places sometimes.”

Paul admits the trip made him realise just how lazy he’s become, as his habit of always choosing the quickest convenience has come at the expense of his wallet.

Like last week, when a quick dash into his local bottle shop saw him paying $30 for four seltzers.

“Driving a few minutes isn’t hard at all,” says Paul. “It’s crazy how much money I’ve wasted just because I’ve been too lazy to get in the car."

“Some of these bottle shops aren’t too far off from pub prices.”

“So yeah, it’s Dan’s for me from now on.”

More to come.
