A local girl has been battling intense internal conflict this week after a once in a generation hurricane forming off the coast of Panama was given the same name as her, forcing her to balance genuine global concern with the undeniable thrill of finally being the moment.
Sophia Lee (24), a self-described empath, learned on Tuesday that the rapidly intensifying Category 4 storm swirling through the Caribbean had been named Hurricane Sophia.
While meteorologists warned of severe flooding, mass evacuations and life-threatening winds, Sophia was quietly vibrating with pride that her name was headlining CNN, BBC and most of Social Media.
“I know it’s a catastrophic natural disaster and obviously that’s not something anyone should celebrate” she said while still contemplating whether or not to make a cute joke on instagram about the hurricane having her name.
“but like… it’s my name… in a dramatic metallic font on the Weather Channel. That’s iconic behaviour.”
Sophia says she has tried to remain respectful, resisting the urge to post a selfie next to a breaking news report on TV.
Friends report she has drafted at least six versions of a story she insists she probably won’t upload.
Her roommate Jasmine says she understands the dilemma.
“Sophia isn’t trying to make it about her, but she also kind of can’t believe the universe finally handed her something this big. It’s a lot to sit on.”
For now, Sophia says she will remain focused on the safety of those impacted, though admits she may quietly screenshot any headlines that feature her name.
