Just 15 minutes outside of Melbourne’s CBD, local Carlton man James Watson has begrudgingly switched from his home Wi-Fi to his personal device’s speedy Hot-Spot.
In an all too familiar situation, the 28 year old who is share-housing with four others has to frequently leach off his own Hot-Spot.
This is despite the share house members chipping in $37.50 each on a monthly basis for the ‘High Speed’ internet, made possible by the NBN infrastructure.
The NBN program which began under the Rudd Government in 2009 and eventually overseen by consecutive Liberal Governments, has faced some major challenges.
Malcolm Turnbull who served as Minister for Communications and is largely credited with the NBN rollout, takes no accountability for the NBN’s shortcomings. He instead blames Labor, a party who were out of government for close to 10 years during the rollout.
“I’m pretty sure Turnbull fucked the NBN,” Watson said.
“When the Liberals were talking about their nuclear policy I was pretty nervous, I mean they fully botched the NBN stuff which you’d think would be a walk in the park compared building nuclear reactors.”
Mr Watson who, at 26 years old still does not pay for his own phone bill, expressed his gratitude for his parents who are ‘shouting’ that one, but he was still stiff about the monthly $37.50.
“Me and the lads were discussing canning Optus all together and just going full time Hot-Spot.”
Mr Watson’s household have continued to foot the internet bill, despite 3 out of 4 household members consistently relying on their personal Hot-Spot to keep the reels flowing.
More to come.
