SES in the Hunter region have reportedly been put on standby this week in case the Knights manage to get up against the Panthers on Sunday.
After a shock win against the Warriors in a packed out Eden Park in Auckland, emergency services have turned their eyes to the Hunter region, where a Newcastle preliminary final could turn the steel city into a scene from World War Z
“We’re planning for the worst,” said one volunteer.
“If they make a grand final it will be the greatest challenge in many of these men and women's lives.”
Authorities are particularly concerned about spontaneous shoeys, burnouts, shirtless men climbing street furniture and emotional novocastrians reminiscing about 2001.
Local bottle shops have increased stock, while kebab shops have rostered on extra staff.
Hunter residents have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel should Newcastle somehow defeat the Penrith Panthers against all odds.
“If you hear screaming, car horns or an entire suburb yelling ‘NEW-CAS-TLE’ at once, do not panic,” the SES spokesperson added.
“That will simply mean they’ve won, stay indoors and listen to announcements.”
With the entire Hunter now preparing for either the greatest night of its life or an extremely quiet Monday morning, locals have been told to keep their phones charged and supply of water available.
