An event so rare that there is not even a name for it took place today as local tradie Trenton Tiosk (38) admitted that today was just medium yakka.

‘Yakka’ comes from the term ‘yaga’, a verb that means ‘work’ in the Turrbal language spoken by the traditional owners and custodians of what is now Brisbane.

Usually prefaced by the word ‘hard’, yakka refers to the sweaty manual labour that generates grass stains, back pains and the most condescending ads for mass produced lagers.

According to most tradies down the pub at 3:30pm, today, yesterday and time immemorial were filled with hard yakka that you wouldn’t even read about mate so don’t ask.

That is except for suspiciously honest tradie Trenton Tiosk who freely admitted that today was pretty cruisy all things considered.

“Most of the tiles we’d already laid yesterday but we still had two days quoted so I just took it easy with a cup of tea in the arvo,” stated Tiosk, his finger holding the page he was up to in a copy of MAD Magazine.

“Owner wasn’t home so I didn’t even have to look busy. Then it rained so that was a good get-out.”

“All up, medium yakka at best, at the absolute best.”

Tiosk then toasted to the day with a mid-strength lager to appropriately quench his medium-earned thirst.

MORE TO COME.
