An older bloke from the French Quarter has unfortunately found himself eating his words today, which might be the only thing he’ll be eating lately.
This comes as Greg Manning-Tatum, 67, suggested that young people who complain about the high costs of rent should simply move out of the city to somewhere cheaper, because ‘not everyone gets to live where they want to, just because they want to.’
But unfortunately for Greg, it appears all those minimum wage workers, which include everyone from his local barista, to restaurant workers, bartenders, and the two nice ladies he gets to clean his four bedroom house on a fortnightly basis, have all taken his advice and moved a few hours out of town – resulting in many businesses shutting down.
And of the ones that do remain open, the cost of food and beverages has skyrocketed to cover the few staff left, who have been able to negotiate a higher salary.
Which means after waiting in line for fifteen minutes for his morning cappuccino, Greg has had to fork out $8 for the privilege of doing so.
“Well, you know I was just sick of the whinging”, says Greg, a bit defensively, “I know everyone wants to live in the French Quarter, but these young people need to learn to live within their means.”
“Or get a higher paying job.”
Our reporter asks Greg that if the only to afford rent is to get a higher paying job, then where do all the minimum wage workers live? Or is he suggesting that minimum wage workers don’t deserve somewhere decent to rent?
“Well, you know…they could just. I guess..”
Greg looks close to understanding, before he appears to short circuit mid conversation.
“They just don’t want to work anymore!”
More to come.
