The mind games are in full swing ahead of tonight’s match between the Sydney Roosters and the South Sydney Rabbitohs.
Already historic rivals – only one of these teams has the chance to advance to the NRL finals.
The Roosters need to rely on mathematical kindness to get through, while the Bunnies know that they are finishing their season at full time tonight.
However, it goes without saying that ruining the Roosters season in a dead rubber match would almost be as sweet as a grand final victory for the South Sydney fans.
Tonight’s match is also shrouded in scandal, as the Rabbitohs vow to play Brandon Smith – a former Roosters player that was traded to South Sydney and only played a couple of matches before immediately getting embroiled in a police investigation.
Rabbitohs coach, Wayne Bennett has labelled the Brandon Smith saga as “trivial” and says the hooker is only facing police charges because he’s a high profile player.
Bennett, a former police officer himself, has shocked the rugby league establishment by backing his number 9, after weeks of giggling from the Roosters who were patting themselves on the back for offloading a trojan horse.
The Kiwi hooker was charged by the Queensland Police Service with one count of supplying dangerous drugs – which could simply mean he went on a bender with some other blokes – and another of charge disclosing inside knowledge for betting, which will be very easy to fight in court given the NRL’s absolutely whorish dependence on integrating sportsbetting into every spare millimetre of the game.
The fact that Smith will be running on tonight against the side that ditched him late last year has left the Roosters shook, as the attention now turns to whether or not they can avoid joining the Rabbitohs for an premature Mad Monday.
Brandon Smith’s future in the NRL after this match remains uncertain, but one thing is for certain is that he has been given full clearance to play 80 minutes tonight.
This also means he’ll probably be playing football against his former club like he’s about to go to prison.
Wayne Bennett has been quick to dismiss allegations that he has ordered Smith to put on as many sickening high shots on key Roosters playmakers as possible, in an effort to ruin the rest of the 2025 season and possibly the next couple seasons as well.
