Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has joined an exclusive list of iconic world leaders by visiting the Great Wall of China as a dipolomatic guest.

During yesterday’s press conference at the ancient landmark, Mr Albanese said The Great Wall represented ‘the longevity of Chinese culture and Chinese achievement as well.”

He now sits alongside the likes of Queen Elisabeth II, Barack Obama, Richard Nixon, Vladimir Putin – and of course, his political hero – former Australian Prime Minister Gough Whitlam.

Back at home, the Prime Minister is facing extreme backlash from the conservative Australian media and political opponents, who take issue with the leader of our government showing respect to our biggest trading partner’s cultural symbols.

After winning a record-breaking 94 seats at the May election, it seems that Albanese’s detractors are still using the same playbook – namely, poking racial hot buttons that have proven to drive even more Australians to vote for anyone but the Liberal Party.

Meanwhile, the Australian government has continued in their mission to demystify our Asian neighbours, by spending a week in China as a guest of the President and his ministers.

This commitment to respectful dialogue has seen the soothing of diplomatic hostilities that were left behind by Albanese’s predecessor Scott Morrison’s relentless war-mongering in the final days of the Liberal Party’s last ever term in government.

While the former PM is now enjoying a plum job consulting to the US defence contractors that benefitted directly from his AUKUS military agreement, his own party are now left to pick up the pieces after facing extreme backlash from Asian-Australian voters who felt like they were being used as a political punching bag for the limping conservative agenda.

However, it seems that Albanese is now at risk of becoming over-familiar with the Chinese diaspora, as was evident during yesterday’s visit to the famous tourism attraction.

“Right. So this is the Great Wall huh?” said Albanese.

“I’ve heard about this place. They’ve done a good job with it”

“So, correct me if I’m wrong. But this must be where those snazzy cars come from. Seen a few of em round Marrickville”
