After spending the best of 6 months campaigning every day to destroy Peter Dutton’s political career, local Teal volunteer Shona Lomu (45) is now turning her attention to the next most pertinent local issues.
She’s done with bashing old politicians over the head, for now, and will instead focus on the what needs to change at her local school.
Shona says she was not overly invested in Federal politics until she was forced to witness Malcolm Turnbull, one of the few politicians she liked, have his career as Prime Minister cut short by neanderthal climate change deniers.
In that moment, she realised that the political party her entire family voted for might not be in safe hands.
In fact, it became clear to her that the Liberal Party – in partnership with the then leader of the National Party, Barnaby Joyce, looked nothing like her or anyone she knew.
She immediately joined a local community movement that set their sights on ousting the local Liberal MP and replacing him with an Independent candidate. After two hard-fought election cycles, they got their way.
But like most teal volunteers, Shona has realised that a glorious victory is immediately followed by a vacuum.
After the elation of installing a local Independent into Federal parliament wore off, Shona has a surplus of adrenaline and community spirit that needs to be put to use.
She’s decided to channel it all into the P&C.
As any kid who spent hours playing in the schoolyard after dark while their parents attended these meetings would know, a Parents and Citizens’ Association (P&C) is a group of community minded people, parents and citizens, who take on a more formal role in assisting their local school by providing feedback on operations, while also fighting for additional resources and opportunities to be involved in their child’s education.
Not only is it a great way for community members to engage outside of local sports, the P&C is also the perfect environment for drama, rivalries and scandal.
And P&C groups around the country are now absorbing hundreds of thousands of highly motivated men and women who are looking for ways to chase the buzz of a succesful teal campaign.
First up, she wants someone to address the allegations that her kids have allowed to play TACKLE football at lunchtime. Someone needs to answer for this. Someone needs to be held accountable. And Shona will not stop until that happens.
