The NRL rumour mill is in full swing this week, as punters and pundits begin to speculate the names that will be listed as foundation members for the second Brisbane team – due to enter the competition in 2023.

The Redcliffe Dolphins expansion franchise are reportedly preparing to make Newcastle’s Kalyn Ponga the richest man in rugby league.

Early numbers that have been thrown around suggest that the Queensland fullback will offered up to $1.4 million a year, which would make him clearly the highest-paid player in the game.

However, aside from what the ambulance chasers at Fox Sports want to write, the real sources of truth can only be found on the ground in Brisbane’s northern bayside suburbs.

And this afternoon one oracle of all rugby league related news is delivering a sermon in the beer garden of a waterfront hotel in Redcliffe.

“Mate I’m telling ya” says Krayg Mumford, a 62-year-old marina attendant.

“Kalyn Ponga has been looking at properties in the peninsula”

“I’m telling ya”

Krayg is one of thousands of imminent foundation members for the new NRL franchise, and has been waiting his whole life to see the Dolphins get a start in the national comp.

As he and his mates are now forced to endure 18 months of waiting until their club’s first match, all Krayg can do is talk about what he’s hearing.

When asked where he is hearing this shit, Krayg offers up an undeniable source.

“My mate Brutus, his cousin.

“Or was it his nephew?”

“I’m not sure. But the kid works at Ray White. Actually not that bright from memory, but that would explain why he’s walking around town telling secrets”

“Apparently Cherry Evans has also been looking around”

“As well as Munster, Grant, Fifita, Tino”

“That’s what I’m hearing anyway”

When asked if maybe James Tedesco was one of those names that Krayg had heard possibily attached to the Dolphins, Krayg says he’s not sure, but probably.

“It’s always good to have two Origin fullbacks up ya sleeve”

“But yeah, Kalyn is 100% locked in”

“Thats what I’m hearing anyway”
