THE BLOOD OF THE STEELWORKS: After 25-years in rugby league wilderness, the Newcastle Knights will face the Sydney Roosters at Sydney Olympic Park in the NRL grand final on Sunday.

And it seems that last weekend's highly emotive victory over the Penrith Panthers in the sudden death preliminary final has sent the people of the Hunter Region into a fever of NRL fandom.

With their beloved footy side lead by the handsome and noble Kalyn Ponga, the people are buzzing with excitement - as only 80 minutes of football stands between them and premiership glory.

Right across the city, locals are painting their homes and shopfronts red and blue as the city rallies behind their mighty Newcastle Knights.

Newcastle's pubs and clubs are ditching table reservations entirely, with first in best dressed the only way to manage the influx of footy fans this Sunday afternoon.

"I'm not bothering with that shit" said Bud Doorus, publican of The Silverjet Hotel in Wickham.

"People don't really acknowledge reserved signs on days like this. If you want a table. Be here when I open up shop at 9am"

However, there have been issues with supply - as Bud has pointed out. Specifically the supply of raspberry cordial.

"Me and every other publican have been shitting ourselves that we might get caught with our pants down if the Knights get up"

In fact, It's been such a concern that major Australian cordial retailer Golden Circle has had to specifically dispatch 3700 metric tonnes of raspberry cordial to Newcastle this week, in preparation for the surge of patrons ordering celebratory VCRs.

A delicious short cocktail made with full fat Coke, vodka and raspberry cordial, the beverage is often considered a permanent fixture of Newcastle's nightlife.

Known as 'The Blood Of The Steelworks' - Newy's publicans say the post-mix and vodka won't be a problem, but the cordial could very well run dry.

Now with the equivalent of an Olympic swimming pool worth of raspberry cordial arriving by plane, Bud says he can relax.

"Look. I always say... It's better than having these blokes hopped up on rum"

"But if we were to run out it would be worse than a pub full of blokes drinking rum"
