A cool breeze whipped at the exposed faces of half a dozen farmers this afternoon as they all moved into position to execute a meticulously planned and high stakes ‘pest control’ mission. It’s understood that the category C license holders were following the orders of Ratty, a renowned fox hunter from way back.

“Right. Dean, Jim, and Rodger, you three stay hidden behind those rocks. Mick, Jack and I will sneak up on the eastern side of this tree guard and flush them out.” Ratty said with authority through the mission specific walkie-talkies.

“They’ll come up this hill here, and that’s where you’ll be waiting.”

“Remember, aim for the eye, protect the pelt.”

“Roll out!” Finished Ratty with a nod before removing the cap on his thermal scope.

And with that, the boys were off on what is the closest thing to a military operation they will ever experience.

Ratty, last name unknown, has been the Diamantina’s leading fox hunter for over 25 years. As well as pest control for hire, Ratty breeds Jack Russells which he puts to use when they’re of age and if they have the right temperament; except for the runts, he sells those off to neighbouring families.

The outcome of the shoot is not yet known, but if previous shoots are anything to go by, it’ll be a bad day to be a fox.

More to come.
