Intense bartering is taking place within a 402km radius of Steel City this week, as Novocastrians scramble to get themselves tickets to the Grand Final.
With the Newcastle Knights heading to their first Grand Final in 25 years, tickets to the event have become the most sought after barcode in NSW.
And while there’s been a frenzy to secure tickets to the sold out game, it’s understood Facebook Marketplace has descended into complete chaos, as degenerate scammers, “Get-rich-flip-tickets-quick” types and passionate fans go to war to secure a ticket to glory.
Speaking to one Lake Macquarie father of three, Darren O’Davis (48) has resorted to listing a free two-week stay at his holiday home up at Boomerang Beach, during Christmas, in exchange for a ticket.
“I’ve got a huge five bedder just off the sand at Boomerangs, it’s usually the place I host Nan, and Pop, my brother and all my wife’s side of the family for the holidays,” Darren told The Advocate, as he negotiated furiously on his home iMac with several potential buyers.
“But if anyone’s got a ticket to the Grand Final, I’ll give them a free stay from the 20th of December right up until New Years Day.”
Aware that his decision to upend a 15 year family tradition is likely to have dire consequences for his family relationships, particularly with his in-laws, Darren has told The Advocate that quite frankly, this is his Christmas and everyone else can get stuffed.
“Nah screw em’, we host every year. My wife’s family are bloody useless, they can book a family room at a Best Western in Buladelah for all I care.”
“The first person who can give me legit tickets to the Knights game can have my holiday house, I’ll even let them take my boat up there too.”
More to come.
