The once unstoppable rockabilly revival of the early 2010s can now only be found in corporate barbershops around the CBD.
Cam Pavey (38), who runs Gentleman's Razor Barber & Co, seems to be running under the assumption that the rockabilly trend is still really cool.
"It's such a classic look, this style will literally never get old" he explained.
Inside the shop, customers are greeted with exposed brick walls, a framed black and white photo of a random guy from 1958, and a shelf of aggressively branded hair pomades with swear words on them.
Despite broader fashion trends moving toward looser fits and less structured grooming,Cam remains committed to the tight fade and shiny pompadour combination that once dominated Instagram feeds around 2014.
“You just can’t beat a clean side part” he added, gesturing toward a client being rotated slowly in a worn out leather chair while a rockabilly playlist played in the background.
“It’s like stepping into a time capsule” said one customer, moments before being offered a complimentary whiskey and a $65 haircut.
"Not to the 50's but to 2013"
Industry insiders believe the look survives because its slightly edgy but still safe enough for corporate squares.
A situation that, for now, appears unlikely to change anytime soon.
