In prison, dinner is always a big thing. Some inmates need to keep one eye over their shoulder. Each meal could be their last. That’s for the average schmuck, not wiseguys like former NSW state politician Eddie Obeid, who was jailed this afternoon for a minimum of three years for misconduct while in office.
But the 73-year-old won’t be living with the other inmates, who live like pigs piled up on each other. The former businessman will be serving his time with other like-minded crooks.
“Oliver Curtis is in charge of the meat,” explained one corrections officer. “He was lucky to get that when he did. Glenn Wheatley was once the meat man but the real privilege is the do the pasta sauce.”
Obeid is set to be one of the most high-profile white-collar criminals to be jailed in Australia since ICAC got Craig Thomson’s prized scalp in 2014.
Speaking to The Advocate from outside Darlinghurst Supreme Court prior to his sentencing, Eddie said that he was ready to take on the responsibilities that come with being the sauce man.
“I’ve got an old family recipe,” he explained. “There’s a fair amount of Middle-Eastern influence and some traditional Lebanese spice, but with [Oliver] Curtis on the meat, we shouldn’t go too hungry.”
“I’ll see you all in 2019. Bonsoir mes amis.”
More to come.
