Transport authorities have contacted Dubbo Regional Council seeking clarification after Wheelers Lane, a road still officially designated as a “lane,” was revealed to be functioning as a six-lane arterial boulevard.
A spokesperson for the NSW Roads and Maritime Services confirmed the department had initiated formal correspondence with council officials after satellite imaging and traffic data showed the road now features multiple divided carriageways, turning lanes, roundabouts and a landscaped central median.
“This roadway does not meet any known definition of a lane under current classification guidelines,” the RMS spokesperson said.
Dubbo Mayor Councillor Iadora Goode-Kone has rejected the suggestion that the road should be renamed or reclassified, stating the council would resist pressure from the state government.
“We dispute the department’s interpretation,” said Goode-Kone.
“The road has been known as Wheelers Lane for over fifty years and will remain as such. Naming decisions are a matter for local government. “
Council documents reviewed by this masthead show multiple upgrades to the road since 2016, including widening projects, resurfacing, and the installation of dedicated cycle infrastructure.
Local residents interviewed expressed confusion about the road’s designation, noting that it now carries heavy traffic volumes and requires controlled intersections to manage congestion.
No timeline has been set for further review. The RMS has indicated it will continue to monitor the situation and may recommend legislative clarification if no resolution is reached at the local level.
More to come.
