In exciting news for fans of sports where it’s perfectly acceptable to tackle a man so hard you break their hip, the summer of cricket is over, and footy season has begun.
The news comes as this week the Betoota Mutts officially launch into their 94th season as a division four rugby union club.
It’s been a long, and particularly wet summer for many of the Mutts, who unfortunately bowed out in the semi-finals against the Windorah Windmills back in late September, and have admittedly been drinking ever since.
But according to club captain Tom Wivell, the disappointment of last year's season is well and truly behind the boys, as they charge full tilt with a head full of steam into a new year, with renewed enthusiasm for club footy.
“Big year for the Mutts, big year!” said Tom, as he stood in a pair of Budgy Smugglers, covered in sand and salt water.
“Little season launch event today, we’ve all come down to Betoota Lake to play some beach touch.”
Speaking to the club captain, who this year will be looking to break the club record of 247 games for the Mutts, today’s sand session is expected to be a big blowout to set the tone for the year.
“Every year the boys come back a little heavier, a little thicker, so today is a line in the sand to put the head down and start shaping up for the year.”
“Course, we’ve also got our new club pub sponsorship, the Pig & Bull Hotel, so we’ll be heading there in five mins to show our appreciation.”
“Next try wins boys, full noise, lesssss go!”
