A woman new to Sydney has experienced an unexpected culture shock this week, leaving her deeply grateful for Australia’s simple coffee ordering system.

Ariana Benningham says she moved after seeing countless TikToks showcasing the idyllic beachside lifestyle of Sydney, eager wake up to a 5am to sun-kissed Aussies eating açai bowls.

But after picking up a part time job at a hole in the wall cafe in Coogee, Ariana was stunned to discover that the accents filling her day weren’t ocker Aussie drawls but a medley of Irish accents.

Ariana admits she made a few blunders early on as she was used to asking for customers’ names the Starbucks way, rather than just shrilly calling out the order.

However, after just two weeks on the job, Ariana says she’s extremely grateful that Aussie cafés stick to the drink names instead, as she can’t for the life of her spell any of these Irish names.

“The names are really pretty but gawd they’re hard to spell,” she laughed. “Niamh, Aoife…”

“Saoirse. Bréanainn.”

“What does ‘that’s great crack’ mean??”

More to come.
