With the Newcastle Knights through to their first Grand Final in 25 years, and the NRL still yet to book pre-match entertainment - there is only one logical outcome.

Newcastle's hero rock group Silverchair must reform and play at the the 2026 NRL Grand Final.

The boys have not played together since a 2010 festival gig in Darwin. The trio of Daniel Johns, Chris Joannou, and Ben Gillies officially announced an indefinite split a year later in May 2011. They have not performed live together since.

Their break-up is not surprising, given the extreme pressures placed on three young men when they became household rockstars at the age of 13.

However, with their hometown making their first grand final appearance since 2001, which coincidentally took place at the absolute height of Silverchair's popularity, and with Newy suffering in a cost-of-living that has been punishing Australia's working class communities since the pandemic... There is no greater reason for the boys to reunite.

The city of Newcastle, and the greater Hunter region, join the rest of Australia in asking the boys to please text each other this week.

It's time to heal. Let the water pass under the bridge. Get in a room together. Play some songs.

And then get on a bus to Sydney.

The NRL will accomodate any request you have if it means we get to see all three of you on stage at the SCG this Sunday - a Rose Tattoo cover would also be appropriate.
