Tens of thousands of excited revellers and over 200 floats will descend on Oxford Street this Saturday night to celebrate the 48th Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade.

This year’s theme is celebration of euphoric rebellion, a “collision of glamour, grit, and raw joy that burns brighter when we stand together” - colloquially referred to as ECSTATICA.

With celebrations already underway, and very well put together men spotted walking in couples throughout Sydney's inner-city - the party promises to be a showcase of queer joy and solidarity.

However, there is a big chance that this party could be severely overshadowed by a bunch of backpackers and skilled visa holders.

Because meanwhile, as half of San Francisco and every L, G, B, T, Q, I and A descend upon the harbour, a similarly excited crowd will be making their way to the city's west.

This comes as every single member of Australia's Spanish and Latin American diaspora make their way to Homebush at the exact time that the Mardi Gras will be kicking off.

In news that hasn't been clocked by the Australian media or the Mardi Gras board, it seems that Bad Bunny is in town.

The Puerto Rican superstar, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, made history earlier this month by becoming the first Spanish-language artist to win the Grammy's Album of the Year, a week before becoming the first solo artist to perform entirely in Spanish at the Super Bowl.

With this information in mind, it might make a bit more sense as to why every single worksite and tech start-up is currently struggling without their lollipop ladies and web developers, as every single Spanish-speaking backpacker, visa-holder, migrant and native-born Australian citizen promises to party harder than anyone has ever partied in the sterilised brickwork of Sydney's Olympic Park.
