Australians travelling to the megacity of London have once again been urged to have their wits about them.
SmartTraveller, the Australian governments travel advice body has implored those heading to the home of the warm lager and the yellow tooth to keep their phones screwed to their hands.
This comes as London sinks deeper into the throne of king of the phone thieves, with about 116,000 phones stolen in London last year.
It has been dubbed the world’s “phone theft capital”, with criminals snatching phones out of people’s hands at will.
The phones then get re-purposed for people chasing a sweet deal or involved in organised crime syndicates.
As a result of the rising tidal wave of young lads and lasses pinching $1500 dollar pieces of hardware, the Australian government has warned it’s citizens to beware of the ‘yoink.’
“You can get yoinked anywhere and any time in London,” explained a SmartTraveller spokesperson.
“So Aussies need to be aware, that if you are mindlessly scrolling on your phone while walking or waiting for a bus – a young fella on a pushie might fly past and go – yoinkkkkkk.”
“We aren’t gonna defend the yoink, but it’s a part and parcel of being in London now.”
“So if you don’t wanna be yoinked, you gotta be aware of wear you could be yoinked from.”
