Opposition leader Peter Dutton has laughed off suggestions that Nazi lunatics are attempting to hijack the No vote for their own personal mission, telling reporters that the man threatening to extrajudicially execute members of the media is “just a regular bloke.”
Over the weekend, a number of Vote No rallies took place across the country, with the event in Melbourne taken over by masked men purporting to be Nazi sympathizers, and the rally in Sydney seemingly crawling with anti-climate change protestors who don’t like journalists.
When asked about the gentleman in Sydney who was wearing a shirt calling for journalists to be lynched, Mr. Dutton just chuckled.
“Oh,” he said.
“That’s just Roger. He’s actually harmless. He was wearing that shirt as a joke. He does this kind of thing all the time! [laughs] No, Roger is actually a gentleman, and I’ve known him for a number of years. You can’t say he doesn’t wear his heart on his sleeve. Unlike Mr. Albanese, who wears his heart on his pant leg,”
“Like every protest, there are people on the fringe of society who will try to hijack it for their own gain. We have seen communists attempt to take over the Yes Vote rallies. Not fake ones like Michael Rowland; we’re talking about real-life communists. The ones that our fathers fought in the jungles of Indochina.”
Mr. Dutton started chuckling to himself again.
“I mean, it’s just Roger. This is so silly. Like, I know what you guys are going to say. Yeah, I know that Lieutenant General David Morrison said, ‘The standard you walk past is the standard you accept,’ but Roger is joking so yeah. Plus, you could say the same about Albo. If he accepts that there are communists at his Yes love-in rallies, then he’s OK with being around communists. Like how I’m OK with being associated with people like Roger.”
