$54 Million Inquiry Finds Juvie That Tear Gasses Pre-Teens Probably Shouldn’t Be Open

The Royal Commission into the Protection and Detention of Children in the Northern Territory has today found that a government institution that tortures children with solitary confinement and chemical weaponry probably shouldn’t be allowed to keep doing that.

The $54 million government inquiry, which was prompted by ABC’s Four Corners report on the systemic abuse perpetrator on young offenders who were locked up in Don Dale Youth Detention Centre, investigated conditions in the NT’s detention centres.

The program highlighted the treatment of Dylan Voller, who was shown hooded in a restraint chair while in detention.

Among other suggestions into how not to torture undeveloped humans was the call to change the age of criminal responsibility from 10 to 12.

“Yeah we really can’t be seen doing that” said a spokesperson from the NT government.

The high security unit of Darwin’s Don Dale youth detention centre should be shut immediately and there should be a plan for closing the entire centre within three months, an inquiry has recommended.
