A local fill-in cricket umpire has today taken the opportunity to check in on his health, after some choice words from a fellow father.

Betoota Plains dad Andy Ball says he’s popped off to Specsavers to get his eyes checked, after the coach of an opposition team voiced concerns about his sight.

Stepping in to help out the Under 12s Betoota Plains Hillbillies against the Bedourie Bullants, Andy said he was trying to set a good example for the boys and girls by umpiring fairly and calmly.

All things were going well, with all the kids getting along and having a good time.

However, after deciding to give the Bullants star batsman out for a measly 7, things turned sour rather quickly.

“Are your eyes painted on champion?” laughed the dad and coach of the Bullants after the pretty clear cut caught behind.

“Honestly, she’s caught that of the ground mate, you can’t be serious,” he continued shouting to the embarrassment of his daughter and his family watching on.

“Nah, how can you give that?” he continued with the laughter from the other parents dying down, as awkward looks started getting shot around.

“Howwwwwwww?” he shouted at the volunteer umpire who had agreed to stand in the blazing sun and concentrate on some junior cricket for the day.

“You should’ve gone to Specsavers, I’m booking you an appointment right now.”

“Deadset mate,” he sighed, storming off to the car for a cool down.

However, while that may have been taken by some as a pretty full on spray, Ball said he was thankful for the advice,

“I decided to take up the offer and see if I needed a hand with potential myopia or the like,” he said.

“They said they’d have a look for me and do some tests which was nice.”

“Wonder what my old mate will say if I turn up to the next game with four eyes,” he laughed.

“Might make for an interesting trip out to Bedourie.”
